Want to know more about Invisalign? Dr. K of District Dentistry, Charlotte, NC, can help you learn the dos and don’ts to properly care for Invisalign:

Invisalign Dos

1. Soak Your Invisalign Daily

Due to constant usage, your Invisalign collects bacteria that can give off a stench and cause cavities. So soaking them in a solution at least once a day. After soaking, use a clean toothbrush to clean food particles and plaque. Just make sure the toothbrush for aligners isn’t the same one as your regular brush. Lastly, rinse the clear trays with warm water and wear them.

2. Brush & Floss Before Using Aligners

There is a high risk of developing an oral infection when you wear your clear aligners without first brushing and flossing your teeth. This is because when you wear your aligners without brushing and flossing, the food and bacteria stuck on your teeth will sit inside the Invisalign, making it a breeding ground for more germs. Always make sure your teeth are clean before you put the aligners back in your mouth.

3. Avoid Consuming Coffee or Tea

Invisalign dentists always recommend avoiding coffee or tea as it can stain your aligners. The only beverage you can drink is water. As cruel it may sound, it’s for the better. Wearing a stained aligner will easily attract attention to your teeth, exposing the fact that you are wearing braces. This will defeat the purpose of Invisalign, along with ruining its quality.

Invisalign Don’ts

1. Don’t Smoke

If you have quit consuming caffeine, that’s good! However, you also need to stop smoking because nicotine from tobacco is very damaging to aligners. Smoking while wearing Invisalign will result in discoloration of your aligners and a pungent smell, among other things. So, if you are wearing Invisalign, you should also stop smoking.

2. Don’t Use Scented Or Colored Cleaners

Invisalign is transparent, so using colored soaps or cleaning solutions can cause discoloration. Not only that, but also make sure you aren’t using any scented soaps too. Both of these are harmful to your Invisalign trays and can weaken the trays’ strength. You may also get an unpleasant taste so stay away from those two things.

3. Don’t Leave Out The Trays In Open Air

It’s a bad idea to leave your Invisalign out in the open air once you take them off. Doing so will only elevate the risk of exposing the aligner to pathogens and bacteria. You may cause more damage to your aligners before wearing them again.
