What are partial dentures?
Partial dentures are false teeth cemented to a gum-colored base made of plastic or a mixture of metal and plastic. The denture is then fastened onto the jaw’s surface with clasps to hold the position and prevent other teeth from changing location. Some of these clasps might be visible when you smile or talk.
Types of partial dentures
Cast Metal Partial Denture
Cast metal dentures consist of replacement teeth attached to a rigid frame made of cobalt and chromium metal, with precision attachments or metal attachments. Precision attachments are preferred since they are less noticeable than metal ones. The frame isn’t visible because it contains a gum-colored synthetic covering. Unless a patient is allergic to metals or has dental diseases, cast metal frames make an excellent candidate for partial dentures. With proper care, the metal dentures can last several years.
Acrylic Partial Denture
Acrylic dentures or flippers are made out of plastic with false teeth set into the base. The dentures are attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps. If a patient has one or two teeth missing, the dentist will probably use acrylic denture. The acrylic dentures are more suitable as temporary options, while a permanent restoration is made.
Flexible partial denture
Flexible partial dentures or Valplasts are a great temporary alternative for people allergic to acrylic or who feel uncomfortable using metal cast dentures. Valplasts consist of gum-colored clasps that fit perfectly in your mouth. The partial denture is made of thin nylon thermoplastic material. The thermoplastic is quite flexible, thin and durable, which makes it comfortable to wear for years to come.

The price of partial dentures depends on the number of teeth that need to be replaced. You might need to spend some extra cash for the materials used to make your partial dentures, but most expenses can be covered if you have dental insurance. Keep in mind that your insurance may or may not include flexible partial dentures. If you have Medicaid, contact your state’s Medicaid agency to find out if your state covers dentures.
